Montréal Fringe Festival The St-Ambroise Montréal Fringe Festival returns with 800 artists from Montréal and around the world performing in more than 20 venues, including several “OFF Fringe” ones. Founded in 1990, the Montréal Fringe runs from May 29 to June 18, with the bulk happening from June 8 to 18. The Fringe Park at the corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Rachel Street also hosts Mado’s Drag Race, this year on June 17 from 4 to 6 pm with guest host, local drag legend and Fringe favourite Uma Gahd. Festival Trans Amérique The world’s most innovative dance and theatre productions will perform at the 17th edition of the Festival TransAmériques which runs from May 24 to June 8. Festival shows include L’étang, a short play that combines the personal and the political through a teenager’s rebellion against family and society May 31 to June 3; and White Out in which a trio of artists from the Quebecois theatre company L’eau du bain play with sound and dreams June 2 to 4. © Mark Gambino DANCE Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal presents Ultraviolet April 27 to May 6, a contemporary dance mixed-bill by Kristen Cere, Roddy Doble, Lesley Telford and Cass Mortimer Eipper at Théâtre Maisonneuve. Les Grands Ballets also presents their blockbuster production of the fairy tale Cinderella May 31 to June 4 and September 8 and 9, choreographed in 2011 by Jayne Smeulders when she was a Principal Dancer with the West Australian Ballet. Cinderella is set in a fantastic and timeless realm, thanks to glittering new sets and costumes designed and crafted in Montréal. Some roles have been created especially for the company’s dancers to bring yet more magic to the scenes in the enchanted garden. Tangente Danse presents the 2023 graduating students of École de danse contemporaine de Montréal remounting pieces by choreographer Marie Chouinard and Jacques Poulin-Denis in Les danses de mai, opus 2023 May 24 to 27 in the Wilder Building. Also in the Wilder Building, Agora de la danse presents POPMOLLE June 14 to 16, an interdisciplinary collaboration bringing together mechanical, human and incandescent bodies as they intertwine and distort in a modern mechanical ballet. © Antoine Saito CLASSICAL STAGE The Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal season continues with Grammy-winning Maestro Rafael Payare conducting From Andalusia to the Plains of Venezuela April 26 and 27 which juxtaposes two heroes in their quest for an ideal Don Quixote, the wandering knight who ventures out to battle evil on the Andalusian plains, and Florentino, a Venezuelan plainsman who wrestles with the Devil in a singing contest in Estévez’s Cantata criolla. Under the baton of Finnish conductor John Storgårds, pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin returns to the OSM from May 10 to 13 to perform Prokofiev’s Concerto no. 2, a work of spectacular bravura that caused a scandal when it premiered in 1913. To close their 89th season, the OSM and Payare perform Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony with American mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung, the OSM Chorus and a children’s choir May 31 to June 3. Also, Dina Gilbert conducts the OSM in five additional Harmonium symphonique concerts including two matinees with guest vocalists Kim Richardson and Luce Dufault June 8 to 10. All OSM concerts are at the Maison symphonique de Montréal. Also at the Maison symphonique, Grammy-winning Montréal homeboy Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Orchestre Métropolitain and famed American soprano Angel Blue in Symphonic Explorations June 11. The program includes pieces by Montréal’s Keiko Devaux, African-American composer Florence Price and legendary American composer Samuel Barber Death of Cleopatra from Antony and Cleopatra, Op. 4. The Opéra de Montréal presents an international cast in a fresh production with OdeM sets and costumes of Giacomo Puccini’s 1904 masterpiece Madama Butterfly May 6 to 16 at Salle Wilfred-Pelletier. With his charisma and warm voice, renowned Montréal tenor Marc Hervieux and the Orchestre Classique de Montréal’s musical escape to Italy features popular Italian favorites in Festa Italiana with Marc Hervieux May 9 at Pierre-Mercure Hall. The Academy Award-winning composer John Williams’ iconic score for Star Wars Return of the Jedi will be performed live in concert by 78 musicians of the FILMharmonique Orchestra under the direction of Erik Ochsner, while the 1983 film plays on the big screen at Salle Wilfred-Pelletier three performances on May 19 and 20. The original film will be shown with French subtitles. Bourgie Hall closes its 12th season with A Play of Contrasts with Jonathan Cohen and Marc-André Hamelin June 2. After their tour of Asia in the fall of 2019, pianist Hamelin and Les Violons du Roy chamber orchestra conducted by Cohen join forces to revive works by the two undisputed masterminds of the Classical era Haydn and Mozart. The 28th edition of the Montréal Chamber Music Festival June 4 to 18 is pulling out all the stops Their opening Cello on Fire! concert June 4 features Stéphane Tétreault and eight other Quebec artists, all graduates of Denis Brott’s cello class! And the festival’s Tribute to Oliver Jones Jazzman Par Excellence June 16 features a star-studded line-up Robi Botos, Ranee Lee, Lorraine Desmarais, Eric Lagacé, Chet Doxas, Taurey Butler, Michel Donato and Dave Laing. WOW! © Caroline Thibault -Pointe-à-Callière MUSEUMS The blockbuster exhibition Egypt. Three Millenia on the Nile at the Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal Archaeology and History Complex runs to October 15. Displaying more than 300 objects from the prestigious collection of the Museo Egizio in Turin, Italy, the immersive exhibition covers 3,000 years of history from the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the Roman conquest. Visitors will see ancient work tools, everyday items and jewelry alongside monumental sculptures and statues, sarcophagi, stelae and mummies. The exhibition puts a human face on Ancient Egypt whose backbone was formed by the majestic Nile River. Over at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts in the Golden Square Mile, the exhibition Parallelles A History of Women in Design celebrates the instrumental role women have played in the world of design through art works and objects dating from the mid-19th century onwards. FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT The action-packed all-ages exhibition Hockey Faster Than Ever at the Montréal Science Centre in the Old Port of Montréal will dazzle hockey and science fans with all the amazing science at play on and off the ice! Spread out over eight zones, there are more than 30 interactive activities, such as getting behind the wheel of a real Zamboni, testing your slap shot skills and taking photos on authentic seats from the old Montréal Forum’s white section and watching yourself on the Jumbotron.
